Djair Cunha, the father of VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Diego, claims Atlético de Madrid want to sign his son.

Diego spent the 2011-12 campaign on loan with the Spanish side.

The former Brazilian international is out of contract in the summer and with Wolfsburg stalling on a renewal, Cunha insists Atlético are ready to step forward.

"The club that has been talking to me lately is Atlético Madrid. On Wednesday, the president will possibly be in Germany to talk to Wolfsburg," he was quoted as saying by AS.

"He can sign a pre-contract [with another club] from January onwards. Atlético Madrid would pay a small sum in compensation to bring the deal forward. That has to be discussed."

Atlético aren’t the only club interested. Brazilian sides Botafogo and Flamengo are reportedly keen, while Cunha confirms a bid from the United Arab Emirates.

"I listened to the interested clubs in Brazil, but we couldn’t reach an agreement on financial terms," he continued. "We also received an offer from the UAE, but it isn’t the right time. The plan is to stay in Europe for another four years."
