Grêmio coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo has reassured striker Kleber that he has a future at the club despite the signings of Hérnan Barcos and Welliton in the past few weeks.

Kleber, 29, has been out since November after he suffered an ankle injury in the defeat to Millonarios (of Columbia) in the Copa Sul-Americana but is close to a return to fitness and this week took part in a friendly between the reserves and youth team.

“Kleber is a major player for us,” Luxemburgo told reporters.

“Everything is on schedule. Hopefully he can be ready for the quarter and semi-finals of the Gaucho. We want him to make it against Caracas.”

Kleber joined Grêmio in November 2011 from Palmeiras but has struggled to score goals since his arrival in Porto Alegre, scoring just six goals in 26 appearances in the Brasileirão last season.

Grêmio face Veranópolis on Sunday in a must win game to qualify for the Piratini Cup and then will play Fluminense on Wednesday in the Copa Libertadores.
