Rafael endured a nightmare evening against Real Madrid’s stars as Manchester United earned a vital away goal in a 1-1 draw in the Champion’s League clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Brazilian full-back was up against former Red Devils favourite Cristiano Ronaldo and German playmaker Mesut Ozil but he struggled to cope with the pace of the game.

Manchester United opened the scoring with an header from England striker Danny Welbeck who peeled off the goalkeeper to nod in at the far post.

But Real hit back ten minutes later as Ronaldo rose to meet Fabio Coentrão’s cross to head past David De Gea in goal.

Los Blancos continued to hammer United’s goal but De Gea was in excellent form to deny Ronaldo, Angel di Maria and Coentrão, the latter with a stunning save with his feet.

The barrage came to no avail as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side head back to Old Trafford with the advantage.

Anderson also featured in a cameo role as he came on for Wayne Rooney in the dying stages of the match.
