Internacional captain Andrés D’Alessandro is hoping that Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan can step into the void left at the club after four experienced players departed during the close season.

D’Alessandro, 31, has said that he was disappointed to see Guiñazú, Bolívar, Renan and Nei leave the club, taking with them years of experience, but hopes the 33-year-old Forlan can step up in their absence.

“Unfortunately people have left the group that were leading it,” the former Portsmouth star told Lancenet!

“Guiñazú, Renan, Nei and Bolívar have gone and they all won a lot. The more experienced, older, players must continue pulling the group, encouraging new ones arriving, and the boys from the youth team.

“Forlán does not have to prove anything, honestly. This is a guy who never ceased to devote. I know it’s time to meet and talk off the field. His dedication is 100% and it has not changed.

“He knows it will take a lot more than last year. He knows.”
