Despire a poor 2012 Brasileirão, Brazil footballing legend Pele has leaped to the defence of Muricy Ramalho, current head coach of his former club Santos, blaming the problems he has faced at Santos this year are caused by the clubs and the CBF.

Santos currently sit in 11th place in Serie A and have no chance of winning the league or qualifying for the Copa Libertadores for 2013 either, and Pele believes that the culture of Brazilian football makes managing in the country difficult.

He said: “I think this complicated situation that has occurred in Brazil in recent years is because the presidents of all the clubs, when they lose a game, they can not explain and blame the coach. The culprit is always the coach.

“We need to see if the board also heard and responded to requests from the coach, see if he has injured players, or this business of the national team players being away.”

“In my time, when they took Pele and Pepe, we had Zito and Del Vecchio. Santos had players for two teams. Now, unfortunately, they have not. I think Muricy already proved to be a great coach.”
