Cruzeiro president Gilvan Tavares has revealed that current Grêmio head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is the boards favourite to take over as manager the club from Celso Roth next season. Luxemburgo, whose contract in Porto Alegre runs out at the end of the season, coached Cruzeiro back in 2002 for one season, winning the Campeonato Mineiro, Copa do Brasil and Brasileirão, and has yet to sign a new deal.

Tavares told TV Alterosa: “I never hid that Vanderlei (Luxembourgo) is a coach I’d like to see again in Cruzeiro.”

Although Tavares wants to bring the former Real Madrid coach back to the club, it is complicated by the the change in the presidency at Grêmio, with Fábio Koff replacing Paulo Odone next year, and there is the possibility of Luxemburgo deciding to move on. Although the president admitted they had yet to make their move.

“It’s a name that we can not talk or think about at the moment because he has a contract with Grêmio and they are fighting for the title of the Brazilian Championship.

“If there is the possibility of him leaving there, of course he is once again the name we dream to work with. If he comes, it give hope to the fans of the great achievements of Cruzeiro in 2013.”
