If Palmeiras are to escape relegation this season then they need look no further than their Argentine striker Hernán Barcos for inspiration. Barcos arrived at Estádio de Pituaçu, Salvador, just 40 minutes before his sides crucial relegation battle with Bahia but later came off the bench to assist for Betinho to score the only goal of the game and secure 3 valuable points.

The Argentine praised the victory in Salvador, but controlled his emotions. For him, there are still many games for Palmeiras to deal with before they are safe from the danger of relegation.

He said: “I think so (staying up). I think if we play like yesterday, with a lot of guts then I think we can,” he told Lancenet!

“The win gives peace, but I know that we lost a lot of games and we need to continue to follow this path and be determined. I think we’re close, but we’re there still a long way to go.”

To get onto the field against Bahia, Barcos had to face a marathon trip. He played for the Argentine national team on Tuesday, but missed his connection in Sao Paulo due to a delay of the plane from Chile.

“Obviously (the journey was worth it), I think it was important for the team. I’m tired, but eager to play. We have an important game on Saturday, we have to win,” he added.

Palmeiras will face Cruzeiro this Saturday.
