Alex, 35, has rejected approached from former sides Cruzeiro and Palmeiras to return to the club of his childhood, where he first made his name in Brazilian football.
Having emerged at his local side, Alex left for Palmeiras in 1997 and it was their he would spring to wider attention by helping the Verdão to a Copa Libertadores victory, before going on to achieve similar unprecidented success at Cruzeiro.
In more recent interviews, though, the 49-cap international has made clear his intention to retire at the club that helped him make a career in football.
Alex told the Coritiba official site: “In 1997 I didn’t promise anyone, but I made a promise to myself that I would one day return to wearing this wonderful shirt. I always dreamt of a return and now it’s coming true.
“I always dreamed of my return, but I am insignificant when compared with Coritiba and it’s fans.
“I want that we can all succeed and fulfil the dream together. Thus, I ask those who have this dream of making Coritiba big and successful to attend the Couto this Thursday at 16.00 so I can realise the dream I have had since 1997.”
