Club officials have denied Internacional coach Fernandão resigned after his side’s shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of Atlético GO, according to reports in the Brazilian press.

The club president, Giovanni Luigi and vice president David Luciano have both reportedly urged the coach to rethink his decision in the wake of the defeat.

Fernandão reportedly made his decision in the locker room shortly after the loss and told the board that he would not be continuing as Internacional coach.

The coach told the press after the match: “We suffered in the second half, we had no comfort zone, we lacked vigour.

He also blamed himself for the defeat, citing his responsibility: “We knew the game was going well and we led at half-time. This is my responsibility. Knew not to calculate the marking game on hold, especially winning the game 1-0.

“D’Alessandro I put to hold the ball, was another miscalculation and I take my responsibility. We fell short in our performance in the second half.”

He also did not return with the delegation to Porto Alegre on Sunday, electing to stay in Goiania overnight.

If his departure is confirmed, then U20s coach Osmar Loss is likely to take over coaching duties for the last eight games of the Brasileirão.

Internacional are currently sixth and are chasing the final Copa Libertadores sport in fourth.
