Ronaldo, 36, retired in January 2011 after a glorious career that was unfortunately hampered throughout by injury problems and has now set-up an agency tht manages the image rights of the likes of Neymar, Ganso, Lucas and Leandro Damião.

It was announced this week, though, that Brazil had sunk to their lowest world ranking since the creation of FIFA"s official rankings, now lying in 14th position.

When asked about the perceived slump, Ronaldo offered an unexpected solution: “We are at our worst position in the FIFA rankings in history, it"s a difficult period for the national team.

“However, we will be at home [in 2014] – that"s an incentive. I think it will have a positive impact. If not… I"ll play again."

The World Cup is a point of concern for many in Brazil, with several projects running behind schedule.

However, Ronaldo – who was added to the tournament"s organising committee – insists that the event will be remembered as a success.

He added: “I"m sure we"ll look back with pride knowing that we organised the best World Cup of all time. The organisation has to be perfect; it will be perfect.
