Fluminense stretched their lead at the top of the Brasileirão to nine points on Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory over Bahia.

Bahia, though, proved stubborn opponents and it wasn’t until the second-half that goals from Bruno Viera and Rafael Sobis secured the victory.

That win was made even more telling by Atlético Mineiro dropping points once more, this time in a 3-0 defeat to a severely understrength Internacional.

Following their 6-0 win on the weekend much was expected of Atlético, but goals from Jackson, Fred and Cassiano effectively end their title-hopes.

São Paulo‘s impressive recent form continued as they closed the gap to fourth-placed Vasco to just one point with victory over their rivals. Luis Fabiano and Osvaldo scored for the Paulista side.

Corinthians and Flamengo were involved in a dramatic game at the Morumbi, which the Paulista side eventually won 3-2 to move up to seventh.

Goals from Edenilson, Paulo André and Emerson Sheik gave the hosts a big lead, following Renato Santos’ opener, before Liédson scored a consolatory 90th minute goal for Flamengo.

Walter Montillo was the hero for Cruzeiro as they recorded a 2-0 victory over Portuguesa to end a recent run of poor form. The Argentine scored from the spot before Souza added a second in the final minute.

Figueirense secured a long awaited 3-1 win over bottom-placed Atlético GO to keep their slim hopes of survival alive. Forward Roni scored twice, while reportedly São Paulo bound striker Aloisio was also on target.

Ponte Preta launched a stunning late comeback to beat Nautico 2-1 and virtually secure their league survival. Douglas had scored for the visitors, but saw his strike cancelled out by Rildo and Marcinho.

An understrength Santos also claimed an unexpected 2-0 away win at Botafogo, with Andre and Mirallas scoring in quick succession to secure victory.
