Zico, a legendary figure in Brazilian football, will manage the Iraqis as they look to obtain a positive result against his own country. However, he was not willing to add to the pressure already surrounding Menezes’ tenure.

Zico told reporters: “I think there are four or five outside the squad who should be playing. I think the defence is already formed – it’s Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, David Luiz and Marcelo. These are unlikely to change. From there forward is not yet settled.

“I don’t see much talk of the tactics or coaching of the team. To criticise on the basis of results is difficult. I haven’t seen any player complain at their non-selection since Mano took over.”

The former Flamengo star believes that the timing of Menezes’ time in command of the Seleção has been unfortunate, with the need to introduce a number of young players to the international scene in a short space of time.

“Everyone wants good results, but it’s a difficult period with players who are not used to representing the Seleção,” he added.

“The guy has shown his ability just to get the job, but I do not agree with the pressure due to solely results. He led the team to the Olympic final, but happened to lose. Now he must look to the Confederations Cup.”
