Bernard, 20, has been the revelation of the Brasileirão 2012 and is in contention for the Player of the Season award, having helped guide his Atlético side to second in the league table.

Despite offers arriving from Europe this summer, it was decided that he would remain in Brazil for the time being, but the midfielder – recently called to to the Brazil squad – admits he would consider a move in January.

“I was surprised [about the offers]," Bernard told Globo Esporte. “I asked him to pass on the proposals when there was something right.

“I am glad, of course, of the European interest. However, at this time I am focused on Atlético because we are at a crucial phase in the season – we are challenging for the title.

“If there is any interest at the end of the season and it is in the interests of both parties, let"s talk."

It is the aim of most Brazilian youngsters to move to Europe at some point in their career, but Bernard insists it is important that his club are happy with any deal offered.

“The desire of any player coming out the academy is to play in Europe and the national team – that"s what I want.

“However, I have a contract and I want to fulfil it. If it is best for Atlético and for me, I will leave happily. It is my desire to play abroad.

“It"s up to the manager and the chairman, they will decide. Then, the final decision is with me. If it"s good for me, then I will be happy."
