Fluminense extended their lead at the top of the Brasileirão with a 1-0 win over Flamengo in a heated Rio derby, whilst third-placed Grêmio could only manage a draw against Santos.

The league leaders increased the gap between themselves and second-placed Atlético Mineiro following a physical encounter at the Engenhão, which saw eight yellow cards shown and a red to Ramon.

Former Lyon striker Fred scored a spectacular overhead kick in the 18th minute to secure the win for Abel Braga’s side.

Elsewhere, Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s Grêmio were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Santos.

Defender Werley gave hosts the lead after 34 minutes and their bid for victory was given a boost eight minutes into the second half when Brazilian international Neymar was given his marching orders for two yellow cards in as many minutes.

However, despite their numerical disadvantage, Bruno Rodrigo grabbed an equaliser for Santos five minutes later.

Corinthians netted three second-half goals against Sport Recife to take three points at the Braga Municipal Stadium.

Romarinho bagged a brace, while Paulinho added a goal to give the hosts their third win in five league outings.

Bahia left Botafogo searching for their first win in four games after they ran out 2-0 winners, thanks to goals from Fahel and Helder.

The 10 men of São Paulo salvaged a 1-1 draw against lowly Coritiba, who move two points clear of the relegation zone.

Despite Rhodolfo’s red card, the away side grabbed a last minute goal through Osvaldo, to cancel out Everton Ribeiro’s earlier goal for Coritiba.
