David Luiz, 25, has proved a popular figure at Stamford Bridge and news of his renewal will no doubt be warmly received by the fans, as well as his Blues team-mates.

The club report that the centre-back, who recently captained Brazil for the first-time, put pen to paper on the deal shortly after the side’s 1-0 victory over Stoke on Saturday.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea,” David Luiz told the club’s official website.

“It is a great club and I look forward to winning more trophies here. I want to play for a long time at the top level – which is what playing for Chelsea means.

“I love everything about the club and especially the fans, who have made me very welcome and given me great support.”

Luiz joined Chelsea in January 2011 and in his year and a half at the club has been both heavily praised and criticised. The Brazilian, though, has won both an FA Cup and Champions League already in his short time in London.
