Ramires, 25, was once more the inspiration for Chelsea and it was his delightful goal before half-time that meant that Chelsea had renewed hope ahead of a gallant second-half performance.

The former-Cruzeiro man raced onto a pass from Frank Lampard, before chipping over the helpless Victor Valdes to give Chelsea the advantage in the tie before the break, before contributing heavily to the defensive effort.

The downside for Ramires is that after picking up a yellow card in the first-half, he will now miss the final in May. A bitter pill to swallow for Chelsea’s hero
