Speculation had suggested that the 20-year-old had felt compelled to move to Europe after Barcelona had thrashed the Peixe 4-0 in the Club World Cup final last December in order to fulfil his potential.

But in an interview with Terra, Neymar insisted that he is content to continue plying his trade at the Vila Belmiro.

”I felt no extra desire to play in Europe after that game,” he said. ”I’m very happy here representing Santos.

”We still have to grow a lot, but I do too. One of the toughest leagues in the world is the Brasileirão, right here in Brazil.

”There are 10 or 15 favourites for the title. For me, it is one of the world’s toughest championships.”

Neymar’s contract with Santos runs until July 2014.
