Ramires, 25, was taking on his old side and played a part in setting-up Salomon Kalou’s winner, but was unaware of the goal having been clattered by Benfica forward Oscar Cardozo after passing the ball.

The incident only came to light in Ramires’ post-match interview with Portuguese TV, when the dynamic midfielder spoke of his delight with the 0-0 draw and that they could now go back home knowing that they simply needed to win.

Ramires may have ended the game confused, but his form this season and particularly in recent games has led to renewed calls for his inclusion in the Seleção squad once more.
