Chasing victory in order to keep up the pace with the group leaders, the Tricolor were shocked after 12 minutes when Macaé took the lead. Pipico took full advantage of slack marking from the Serie A giants, to head home a cross unchallenged in the penalty area.

Fluminense had tried to press on for the equaliser, but were let down by their target man Rafael Moura – who looked disinterested throughout most of the game.

On the hour mark, Wallacer doubled Macaé’s lead with a superb strike from just outside the box, before Josiel added a third with a header ten minutes from time.

20-year-old forward, Matheus Carvalho, did find the back of the net for Flu in the 89th minute, but his close range effort proved to be a mere consolation goal.

Macaé’s win keeps them top of Group A with four wins from four, whilst Fluminense sit fifth in Group B with just three points out of a possible tweleve.
