The troubled striker joined the Paulista club from Roma last March, and made just eight appearances, scoring twice.

An Achilles problem had forced Adriano out of action for the vast majority of last season, but since recovering from the injury in October, the player has struggled to lose weight.

Corinthians had prepared a specific fitness programme for the former Brazil international to abide by, but the clubs head-coach, Tite, admitted last week that his training had lacked intensity, quality and dedication.

“Corinthians did everything to help Adriano,” said Director of Football, Roberto de Andrade. “He said it himself. We have done everything in our power to get him fit. We concluded it was best to terminate the contract and he agreed.”

This is now the second time a club has terminated Adriano’s contract, after Roma had also done so in 2011, two years before it was due to expire.
