“I dream of making history by winning a competition that is important to our country," said Lucas to Globo Esporte. “We have never won it. I hope it will secure my place in the Seleção."

Lucas insists though that he is not yet confirmed of his place and must keep working hard for São Paulo to secure a place in the side this summer.

“I am hoping to get my passport stamped [for the Olympics] every day. I try to give my best for both Sao Paulo and the Seleção

“No-one is guaranteed a place and I have to prove every day that I am good enough to be there."

Lucas could have a chance to line-up alongside close friends from São Paulo at the Olympics, with both Bruno Uvini and Casemiro likely to make the squad when announced in July.

“This excites me as well, but what motivates me most is the dream of winning the Olympics.

“If we win, we"ll go down in history, because Brazil is seen as a footballing country and cannot continue not having that title in their honours list.

“Whoever is there, we have to bring that gold medal home for the Brazilian people."
