Cruzeiro were the first of the Minas Gerais giants in action, taking on Guarani-MG at the Arena do Jacaré in Sete Legoas. Having not played last weekend, this was the Raposa’s first game of the season and they adopted a suprisingly defensive outlook with three volantes and only one meia. Vagner Mancini was made to pay for his conservatism, as Magalhaes’ first-half goal consigned the inspirationless Cruzeiro to a 1-0 defeat to start the season.

On the other hand, city rivals Atlético Mineiro claimed an away win in the Nassri Mattar over América TO. Rodrigo Sena opened the scoring for the home-side, but second-half goals for André and Mancini were enough to secure Galo a hard-earned three points away from home. Atlético and América Mineiro are now the only two teams with a 100% record after two rounds of action.
