In 2011, the Gigante de Colina were crowned the Copa do Brasil champions, finished second in the Campeonato Brasileirão and reached the semi-final of the Copa Sudamericana.

Along with defender Dedê, Diego Souza was arguably Vasco’s top-performers last season and the playmaker claims that hard work in pre-season is the ingredient to a successfully year.

”From the beginning (of this season) we will seek victories because this year has everything to be a special one for the club,” Diego Souza explained to Lancenet.

”Everything that happened last year was the result of hard work. I had a good start and I’m working hard to do that again (this year). When this happens, the year tends to be successful. We have great championships ahead so the work is extremely important.”

Vasco will return to the Copa Libertadores after an eight year absence. Their first game in South America’s most prestigious comes against Uruguayan side Nacional on the 9th February.

Meanwhile the Copa do Brasil champions’ first game of 2012 is against Americano this Sunday in the Carioca state championship.
