The Copa do Brasil champions gave away a penalty in the first half when defender Douglas brought down Universitario midfielder Rainer Torres inside his own penalty area. Striker Raul Ruidíaz stepped up to take the spot kick, sticking his shot passed keeper Fernando Prass.
The second goal came in the fifty ninth minute of the second half, when Johan Fano was put through on goal and cooly slotted his shot passed a helpless Fernando Prass.
Vasco will now have to overcome a two goal advantage when the two sides meet once again for the second leg next Wednesday.
