The 58-year-old, who was in charge of Japan in the 2006 World Cup, was strongly linked with the role recently, and has now agreed a deal to manage the 2007 Asian Cup champions.

“It’s all okay,” he said. “My lawyers and I have sent a draft contract there. From my side everything is okay. All that remains is for us to sign the final contract.

“They are thinking of a long project and want to qualify for the 2014 World Cup,” Zico continued. “It is a great challenge in my career. I overcome every obstacle with hard work and determination.”

As well as Japan, Zico has also managed Kashima Antlers, Centro de Futebol, Fenerbahce, Bunyodkor, CSKA Moscow and Olympiacos. He won 72 caps for Brazil, scoring 52 goals in the process.
