The 21-year-old right-back suffered the injury prior to United’s game against West Bromwich Albion yesterday at the club’s Carrington training ground complex. A statement on their official website confirmed his lengthy absence.
His brother Fabio was able to play against West Brom, as was Anderson, with both Brazilians completing the full 90 minutes. Wayne Rooney put United ahead, before Shane Long equalised, but a late own goal from Steven Reid gave the visitors the win.
Chelsea were also in action yesterday, drawing 0-0 at Stoke City. Ramires and Alex both played the entire game, but both will be disappointed they could not start the season with a victory.
On Saturday, Lucas played as Liverpool were held 1-1 at home by Sunderland. Copa America star Luis Suarez put the Reds in front after missing a penalty, but the points were shared thanks to Sebastian Larsson‘s fine volleyed equaliser.
