Man-of-the-hour Scholes opened the scoring for the home side after just nine minutes. Wayne Rooney added the second from the penalty spot on 28,’ and United went in at half-time 2-0 up.
Six minutes after the break, Anderson made it three, and on the hour Danny Welbeck scored the fourth. Two goals from Mame Biram Diouf (69′ and 74′) completed the rout and gave Scholes the perfect send off after 17 years of service for the club.
Rafael and Fabio both featured at some point for the Premier League champions, but the former is still recovering from a knock picked up earlier in pre-season and is unlikely to play in Sunday’s Community Shield.
The New York Cosmos side was assembled by Pele and Eric Cantona, with the latter managing the team on the night. It included, among others, former Red Devils Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Dwight Yorke, as well as 2006 World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro.
