Sandro was forced to leave his Brazil teammates recently after being diagnosed with problems in his knee and calves. He returned to London for more tests, and having now had surgery faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

“Following consultation with an independent knee specialist, Sandro underwent surgery on his left knee in London,” said a statement on Tottenham’s official website.

It went on: “Sandro withdrew from Brazil’s Copa America campaign on Tuesday due to injury with scans confirming he had torn his lateral meniscus, as well as suffering a calf strain.

“The specialist has advised a three-month rehabilitation period before a return to full training.”

The 22-year-old enjoyed a promising debut season at White Hart Lane, playing 26 times and scoring once. His form even saw him rumoured as a target for Real Madrid, but his agent has previously played down any chance of him leaving.
