As with Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay were held by one of the weaker teams in the competition. Peru took a surprise lead on 24 minutes through Paolo Guerrero, who calmly rounded the Uruguayan ‘keeper Fernando Muslera and slotted into an empty net.

Uruguay’s equaliser came through Luis Suarez, who slotted in a pass from Nicolas Lodeiro in first half injury time. The second half was short on chances, although Guerrero had a great opportunity to win it for Peru late on but headed wide.

World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay will be disappointed they were unable to get off to a winning start, but Peru will be pleased with a point. In the next round of fixtures, on July 12, Uruguay play Mexico and Peru take on Chile.
