After missing a penalty in Santos" recent 5-4 defeat to Flamengo, Elano was harassed by fans after the game, and said that he would rather quit the club than suffer the criticism that he had been receiving.

But speaking to TV Record, the 30-year-old said: “I am delighted to be with Santos, and have won two titles [the Campeonato Paulista and the Copa Libertadores] in six months. I do not want to go. Brazil is a very good place to be."

It was the second recent penalty miss for the former Manchester City player, as he was also unsuccessful from the spot during Brazil"s Copa America quarter-final shootout defeat to Paraguay earlier this month.

He will hope to win the Santos fans back round as soon as possible, starting with the game away to Atletico Paranaense tonight, for which he has been included in the squad.
