Gabigol’s future is uncertain after the two-year suspension ordered by a Brazilian sports court, due to attempted fraud during an anti-doping test. This news came at the attacker’s worst moment at Flamengo, with few goals, sidelined for minutes and doubts over the renewal of his contract that expires in December.

Gabriel Barbosa denied the accusations and anticipated that he will appeal, while the club was surprised by the decision made by the Sports Anti-Doping Court of Justice. The complaint indicates that on April 8 of last year the forward failed to comply with the schedule and disobeyed the instructions of a surprise test before the final of the Carioca Championship with Fluminense.

A transcendental figure in the 2019 Brasileirao and Copa Libertadores titles, Gabigol’s present is far from the glory experienced so few years ago under the technical direction of the Portuguese Jorge Jesus.

Emerging at Santos, he had bad experiences at Benfica in Portugal and Inter Milan. It was his arrival at the Rio team at the beginning of 2019 that took him to the top of his career, to the point of reaching the Brazilian national team.

In the Seleção he scored five goals in 18 games, but he has not been in a squad for two years. This comes hand in hand with a considerable drop in performance in his club, which now has Pedro’s main scoring card.
