Real Madrid left-back Marcelo will lead his team out in tonight’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador in Porto Alegre. It’s the first time that the player will captain the Seleção.

Brazil coach Tite has a policy of rotating the captaincy and tonight will see Marcelo get his turn. Brazil have already qualified for next year’s World Cup with four qualifiers to spare.

They follow up tonight’s match against Ecuador by taking on Colombia in Barranquilla on Tuesday evening. Tite will pick another player to captain the side for that fixture.

Marcelo was delighted to be awarded the honour, “For me, it I am immensely proud to play for my country. Now to be captain for the first time is something that is priceless.”
