The winner of last year’s FIFA Puskás Award, Wendell Lira thinks Arsenal playmaker Mesut Özil is the favourite to win the prize for the best goal of this year.
Mesut Özil scored a spectacular goal against Ludogorets on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League. The German scooped the ball over the goalkeeper and left two defenders sprawled on the floor before slotting home to give Arsenal a 3-2 win against the Bulgarian side. For the Brazilian Wendell Lira, Özil is the favorite to win the Puskás Award this year. But he doesn’t rule out the chances of Barcelona striker Neymar, who’s a contender for his sublime goal in the win over Villarreal, and the volley from Kevin-Prince Boateng at Las Palmas, also against Villarreal.
Wendell Lira said: “Out of the goals I’ve seen so far, I think they’re the three most beautiful because they are great goals of intelligence, reasoning, so they deserve to win the Puskás Award. Neymar last year, Boateng, with whom I play for a long time in videogame and that of Özil was wonderful because it was a move of pure ability, reasoning, reflection and intuition to not hit first time. I think the goal from Özil is a favorite because it is a very beautiful goal. But I think those other two also have chances.”
Wendell won the last edition of the Puskás Award after scoring from a beautiful acrobatic volley, on March 2015, in Goianésia’s 2-1 win over Atlético-GO. He added: “They are different goals. My goal is different from Özil’s goal. I do not like to compare, because mine was more acrobatic, a half-bicycle-kick and half volley… The move was designed quite differently. But I really liked that goal frim Özil. For me it was a great goal.”
