After getting closer to the permanence of playmaker Lucas Lima, who’s expected to fulfill his contract, Santos now wants to convince Gabriel Barbosa to stay at the club.
For this, the board of Santos have outlined a career plan for the number 10. Gabigol’s current contract with Santos runs until 2019, but the Brazilian side wants to renew the bond for two more years. According to Globo Esporte, Santos are willing to increase the wages of the player, and pay a signing bonus, in addition to other bonuses for objectives achieved, such as titles and number of goals scored. Just like they did with Neymar, Santos are planning to provide him profits from the exploitation of Gabigol’s brand, with sales of exclusive products and events.  The career plan proposal may also include language courses, media training, a psychologist and a speech therapist.
Gabigol’s family and agents understand that it would be better for the 19-year-old’s career to stay in Brazil at least until the end of the year, unless they get an irresistible proposal from a big club in European football. Santos president Modesto Roma said: “We will do everything for the permanence of our players. It is good for Santos and Lucas Lima that he’s fulfilling the contract. And the club also wants Gabriel to fulfill it, unless they pay the release clause. We are willing to talk, negotiate. The career of a player is not just based on money.”
Last week, ESPN Brasil had reported that Premier League side Arsenal sent an official proposal to the representatives of Gabigol, and that the striker was excited by the prospect of joining the Gunners.
