São Paulo pretty much accepts that the transfer of Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri to Europe is inevitable.
Recently, the father of Jonathan Calleri revealed that his son would have a verbal agreement to join Premier League side Tottenham. And for Calleri’s São Paulo teammate Diego Lugano, a former West Brom player, it’s time for the team to be realistic and understand that they cannot count on the Argentine in the second half of this year. The striker’s contract was valid until June 30, but was extended so that he can play in the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores against Atlético Nacional, on 6 and 13 July.
Lugano said: “Knowing that Calleri will go away is very predictable. He has a very good age to go to Europe. It was always his dream and he’s doing very well in Brazil, which facilitates the transfer. There are investors who put money on him, and it will not be São Paulo who will give money to that group. You have to be realistic and hope he scores more goals and help us lift the cup before he leave.”
There is a chance of Calleri’s contract being renewed until the end of the year if São Paulo win the Copa Libertadores title. Calleri is the top scorer of the continental competition with eight goals, and has expressed his interest to stay at the clun if there’s an opportunity to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup.
