One of the three finalists for the FIFA Puskás Award, Brazilian attacker Wendell Lira travels to Zurich on Saturday and is dreaming about winning the prize for the best goal of the year.
The player, who can take a person as an escort during the ceremony, said that the only person that came to his mind was wife Ludymila Miranda. He told Globo Esporte: “I’ll take my wife. The only name that came to mind was hers. We’ve been through so much together, and she has stood next to me in all hassles. It couldn’t be someone else, just her.”
By mentioning “hassles”, Wendell refers to some dramas that he has faced in his career. He was revealed in the youth system of Goiás and showed great promise at the start of his career, but injured the cruciate ligament of his right-knee twice. He added: “At times, it was my family that helped me to stay steady, especially Ludymila. Always been there for me and encouraging me to continue. Even thought about ending the career several times. But she is the reason why I haven’t given up.”
Wendell turned 27 on Thursday, and is dreaming about winning the Puskás Award on Monday in Switzerland. He said: “Being in the top-3 and to be able to travel to meet so many star players already makes me happy, but winning the Puskás Award would be the ideal gift. I try not to create expectation, but I end up thinking about it all day.”
