Careca played for Brazil in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, won the Brazilian Championship with Guaraní and São Paulo and was part of Napoli’s “Ma-Gi-Ca” forward lineup with Giordano and Maradona.
Careca will be part of the technical staff of the Brazilian national team during the upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Argentina, in Beunos Aires, and Peru, in Salvador next month. He played 63 matches for the Seleção and he’s the eighth name to work with the team since the end of last year’s FIFA World Cup when the Brazilian Federation changed the technical staff. In the first two rounds against Chile and Venezuela, Cafú, World champion with Brazil in 1994 and 2002, assisted Dunga actively participated in the team’s preparation. Since CBF launched the new project, the former players chosen by the authority were Mauro Silva, Oscar Bernardi, Jairzinho, Edu, Clodoaldo, Edmílson and Cafú.
