Third-placed Grêmio lost the chance to close the gap between Brasileirão leaders Corinthians on Wednesday after sharing the point at the Itaquerão.
The Porto Alegre based outfit played out a 1-1 draw against Corinthians and remain six points short of the leaders, but coach Roger Machado insists his team could’ve come out with a victory. Machado, however, praised his team’s performance in São Paulo and expressed his satisfaction with the result against a “great opponent.” The draw leaves Grêmio with 45 points; six behind Corinthians and three points behind Atlético Mineiro who defeated Avaí 2-0. Machado was quoted in ESPN Brasil: “If we had a winner here, I believe it would have to be Grêmio. We wanted to take all three points against this great opponent we faced. I leave satisfied and content with the result, on top of a great performance, which is more important.”
