Argentine side River Plate are the new Copa Libertadores champions after defeating Tigres UANL 3-0 on aggregate.

The two teams had drawn 0-0 in the first leg at UANL and the start of the return game yesterday also began in a cautious fashion. But River Plate broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time before racing away with victory.

Lucas Alario, Carlos Sanchez and Funes Mori were the scorers and River Plate will now be South America’s representative in the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup.

Mexican side UANL had defeated the last Brazilian side in the competition (Internacional) at the semi-final stage. Their striker Rafael Sobis felt the goal on the stroke of half time was key.

“They scored a goal late in the first period when the game was balanced,” the Brazilian told Fox Sports. “Then we controlled the game, it was only a matter of time before we scored. And that was when the referee whistled for their penalty, I do not know if it was justified. They killed the game and we lost our balance. I congratulate them, they have earned it. That’s football, life continues, before long we will play in another competition.”
