Mexico Head Coach Miguel Herrera has named his 23 man squad for the 2015 Copa América.
With the CONCACAF Gold Cup to also contend with, Herrera has overlooked a number of Mexico’s more prominent players, who will be saved for that tournament, which will be held in Canada and United States in July.
The likes of Giovani dos Santos, Carlos Vela, Javier Hernández, Héctor Herrera and Andrés Guardado have been left out, as a result, with Herrera naming a largely Mexico-based squad.
In his selection, only veteran Rafael Márquez and forward Raúl Jiménez are based in Europe, with the former considered a surprise inclusion, given that he was expected to be chosen for the CONCACAF Gold Cup instead.
Amongst those selected for the Copa América, ageing forward Vicente Matías Vuoso is an unexpected choice, while León’s Luis Montes gets a chance after missing the 2014 FIFA World Cup through injury.
Mexico are regularly ‘guests’ at the Copa América and this time around will compete in Group A, against hosts Chile, Bolivia and Ecuador.
