Flamengo took a massive step in the right direction with a priceless 1-0 win over fierce rivals Botafogo at the Maracana last night, a win that took them off the foot of the Serie A table and within sight of teams sat in the middle of the league.

The Rio de Janeiro sides met for a derby that was super-charged as new coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo took charge of Mengao for the fourth spell and at a time when his troops had not won since the beginning of May.

And it was 33 year-old Alecsandro who delivered for his new boss, the former Atletico Mineiro managing to get on the end of a cross from Joao Paulo to fire home a bullet header just after the half hour mark.

Flamengo lost Victor Caceres to a second yellow card in the dying seconds of the match but the win provides Luxemburgo with a solid base from which to plot the team’s recovery.

They next face Chapecoense on Sunday whilst Botafogo must host impressive league leaders and defending champions Cruzeiro the day before.
