The Botafogo goalkeeper has given his backing to Luiz Felipe Scolari’s first-choice stopper for the World Cup.

In front of the media, Jefferson gave his opinion on the battle for Brazil’s number one jersey.

He said: “The holder is Julio. We have to have respect for what he"s already done for the national team.

“It"s a healthy competition. Julio Cesar and Victor are two great goalkeepers and also my friends. I deeply respect both as people and professionals. But everyone here is seeking [a starting] place. We all want our place. But the competition is with respect, especially [respect for] Big Phil’s decision," Jefferson said.

“We are going to train to our maximum to represent the Seleção. Proof of this was in the Confederations Cup. On that occasion, we had respect, we sought the best for the squad, and Julio Cesar was the best of the tournament. Everyone won like this."

Jefferson’s comments came after SporTV.com announced the results of a poll in which site users preferred Victor as Brazil keeper for this summer’s tournament.
