1998 World Cup winner Marcel Desailly has suggested that should Spain retain the tournament this summer in Brazil, they would then become the best international side in the history of the game in what would be a fourth straight major trophy success.

Desailly, who also won the European Championships in 2000, told FourFourTwo: “If Spain win the World Cup, it will be an amazing moment.”

“The will for sure be the best national team of history. We had the opportunity to go for the second one with France and we know how difficult it is to handle the pressure.”

“But Spain collectively, tactically, they have the players. I will be very interested to see how Spain handle this, because we know everything about them, but they still surprise us and they are able to deliver every time very good games and performances.”

The holders begin their campaign on June 13 against Netherlands in Salvador in a mouthwatering opener, before games with Chile and Australia in Group B.
