Inter Milan defender Juan Jesus suffered a serious injury on Saturday in his club’s 2-2 draw with lowly Bologna and the player will miss the rest of the season and possibly the start of next.

The Brazilian Jesus, 22, left his homeland after a transfer to Italy from Internacional in 2012 and had been enjoying a solid season with the Nerazzuri, but the rupturing of his medial collateral ligament in his right knee has ended the current campaign.

It is a blow to Inter’s Europa League aspirations, especially after having missed out on Europe entirely last year, as well as the player’s World Cup hopes; Juan Jesus had been mooted as a potential ‘bolter’ to make Luiz Felipe Scolari’s squad due to his versatility at being able to play centre back and as a full back. He has featured for the national side on four occasions since 2012.
