The 1994 World Cup winner has been slapped with a 12-month driving ban for refusing to take a breath test.

Romário, now a politician, refused to comply with a routine check in Rio de Janeiro last Saturday.

According to Brazilian media outlet Globo, Traffic police handed him a R$2000 (£500) fine, seven points on his licence and gave him a year-long ban.

The 48-year-old scored over 1000 goals in an illustrious career but more recently, and in his capacity as a politician, he has been a vocal critic of Brazil’s World Cup preparations.
