The Blues have shown an interest in speaking to the striker and may include the goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the deal. According to The Times, the London club have opened negotiations with Atletico with a view to signing the Brazilian ahead of next season.

To reach an agreement, Chelsea may include the goalkeeper Courtois in the deal. The Belgian 21-year-old is currently on loan at the Spanish club but belongs to Chelsea. Another factor which may help facilitate a deal is the excellent relationship between the Chelsea board and Jorge Mendes, manager of both Diego Costa and José Mourinho.

It’s not the first time that Costa has been linked with Chelsea. In October, the Daily Mirror said that the naturalised Spaniard was one of Mourinho’s targets. At the time, it was estimated that deal would be worth £35m.

With 19 goals, Diego Costa is the leading goal scorer in the Spanish league. Chelsea’s current attacking options include Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o. Between them, the trio have only managed eight goals so far this season.
