Manchester United’s hopes of signing Thiago Alcântara have been dealt a blow after Spain manager Vicente del Bosque urged the youngster to remain at Barcelona.

The 22-year-old is reportedly among United’s top summer targets having impressed whilst leading Spain Under-21s to European Under-21 Championships success this year.

Son of Brazil World Cup winner Mazinho, Thiago has reportedly been concerned by the lack of first team opportunities at the Camp Nou, fighting with likes of Xavi, Iniesta and Fabregas for a starting spot.

Barcelona have looked to give Alcântara assurances and now del Bosque has joined them in urging the midfielder to stay put, reports The Independent.

“The most important thing for Thiago is that he keeps getting games,” said the World Cup winning coach.

“There are other options, but I think he will get them at Barcelona, he is held in a very high regard at the club.”

This summer has seen the player’s €18 million release clause reportedly ready to be met by United but such offer has yet to come about and today Thiago has begun pre-season training with Barcelona.

Club spokesman Toni Freixa told Radio Catalunya: “We have the players we have and Thiago is one of them.

“Pre-season with us begins as scheduled.”
