Flamengo have started negotiations to sign former Fluminense right-back Mariano, who currently plays in France for Bordeaux.

The rubro-negro have been in search of a right-back to replace the ageing Leonardo Moura, with manager Jorginho forced to play midfielders Luiz Antônio and Elias in the position

Flamengo’s executive director of football Paulo Pelaipe has, however, denied any interest in Mariano, saying: “Mariano is not in the list”.

Mariano joined Bordeaux last year after shining at Fluminense, where he was elected the best right-back in the Brazilian League in 2010.

The right-back was also called up for Brazil’s national team the same year but did not see any playing time under manager Dunga. A return to Flamengo, though, could his chances of a return to the Seleção squad.

Fla are also reportedly interested in Bologna’s centreback Roger Carvalho. The defender previously shone at Figueirense in 2011.

Paulo Pelaipe has confirmed Flamengo’s interest for the defender, saying: “Roger Carvalho is a player Jorginho knows, so we are seeking information about him. But there is nothing certain yet”.
