Brasilia’s local authorities have turned to the United Nations for their assistance in a bid to ensure the new stadium is complete in time for the Confederations Cup in June.

The Brazilian capital is due to host the opening game of the Confederations Cup on June 15, but the Mane Garrincha stadium is said to be only 87% complete ahead of FIFA’s April 21 deadline.

Reuters reports the Brasilia government this week signed a R35 million (US$17.61 million) agreement with two UN agencies under which they will procure services and items such as tents, generators and security cameras for the stadium.

“With the short time frame and the need to focus on finishing the stadium, the federal district government was not able to do the procurement on time with public bidding,” said Arnaud Peral, the UN Development Program’s deputy representative in Brazil.

With a capacity of 70,000, the Mane Garrincha is the second largest stadium being developed for the World Cup.

However, ahead of its two test events on May 18 and 25 the new venue’s roof has yet to be completed, fittings are yet to be installed and the pitch has yet to take shape.
