Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan struck twice for Internacional in the semi-finals of the Taça Piritini on Sunday evening to see his side through to the final with a 2-0 victory over Esportivo.

In a fiercely competitive encounter, the opening minutes were full of midfield squabbles and scrappy play as both teams sought to seek control of the game.

On 20 minutes, Esportivo had the ball in the net through striker Gilian but found themselves denied by a mistaken offside call, much to the disappointment of coach Luiz Carlos Winck.

Ultimately, though, it was Serie A side Internacional whose quality shone through with two quite remarkable efforts from Forlan.

On the half-hour mark, the Uruguayan picked the ball up in midfield and, on this occasion opting to go alone, launched a stunning shot at goal that left goalkeeper Fabiano stranded and open the scoring.

Not content to stop there, Forlan would once more light up an otherwise unspectacular game in the second-half.

Picking the ball up outside the area once more, the former Golden Boot winner turned his opponent inside-out before this time firing a low right-footed shot into the bottom corner. A second outstanding goal to cap a fine individual display.

The one remaining action of note would come in the 75th minute when Internacional manager Dunga would see red for a show of dissent in the technical area.

The 1994 World Cup winner could now miss the final of the tournament against São Luiz next weekend.
